Questions

Remodeling questions we are asked most

Ten answers to the things people actually ring up and ask, written the way we would answer them on the phone rather than the way a brochure would.

How much does a kitchen remodel cost in Woodside, NY?

For a typical Woodside apartment or row-house kitchen, a full remodel usually lands between $45,000 and $95,000, and a bathroom between $28,000 and $55,000, depending on the size of the room, whether plumbing and walls move, and how far up the cabinetry and stone you go. Our pricing page sets out the real ranges room by room and explains the four decisions that genuinely move the number.

How long does a remodel actually take?

A kitchen or bathroom is typically eight to fourteen weeks on site once approvals are in hand; a whole apartment is four to seven months. The part people underestimate is not construction, it is approvals and lead times — which is why our schedule starts there. The project timeline page breaks all four phases down.

Do you handle co-op and condo board approvals?

Yes, and it is a large part of what we do. Rajan prepares the alteration agreement package — drawings, insurance certificates, contractor licences, schedule — in the format your managing agent and building engineer expect, and deals with their queries directly. Boards that meet quarterly are the single most common reason a start date slips.

Do I need a permit for a kitchen or bathroom?

Often, yes. Like-for-like replacement with nothing moving frequently does not; moving plumbing or gas, altering walls, changing a layout, or work in certain building classes does. We assess it during the design study and tell you which category you are in before you sign anything, rather than discovering it in week two.

Can we live in the apartment while you work?

Sometimes, and we will be honest about when it is a bad idea. A bathroom in a two-bathroom apartment, or a kitchen where a temporary one can be set up, is usually liveable. A whole-home renovation with the floors coming up rarely is. Dust barriers and filtration make it possible; they do not make it pleasant.

What are the partner houses, and do I have to use them?

They are the twelve cabinetry, furniture, surface and lighting houses we specify and install most often — several of them the interiors divisions of fashion and design houses. You are not obliged to use any of them. They exist so that the kitchen and the furniture that goes in it can be decided in one conversation, with trade pricing passed through and our margin stated openly.

What happens if you open a wall and find a problem?

In a Queens building from the twenties, we usually do — old wiring, dead pipework, a floor well out of level, a header that was never installed. The contract prices those scenarios in advance, so the conversation on the day is about which option you want, not about how much extra it is going to be.

Do you do offices and shops as well as homes?

Yes. Roughly a third of our work is commercial — offices, studios, shops, small restaurants and professional suites. Commercial work is sequenced around a lease date and a landlord's building rules, and we routinely phase it so a business can keep trading through the build.

What warranty comes with the work?

Every project carries a written workmanship warranty from us, on top of whatever the cabinetry, stone, appliances and furniture carry themselves. It is handed over as a document at handover along with the full drawing set, the finish schedule and the furniture schedule.

What areas do you cover?

Woodside first, then the rest of western Queens — Sunnyside, Jackson Heights, Elmhurst, Astoria, Long Island City, Maspeth, Corona, Rego Park, Forest Hills, Middle Village, Ridgewood and Glendale — with larger projects across the wider borough, Brooklyn and Manhattan. The service areas page has the full list with ZIP codes.
