Design, Furniture & Finishes

Designer and fashion-house furniture in Woodside, NY

New York dresses well and then furnishes badly, because the two decisions are made eleven months apart by different people. We hold trade accounts with twelve design and furniture houses — several of them the interiors divisions of fashion ateliers — and we specify the room and the things in it at the same time.

Project stalled with someone else? We do take over unfinished work. Bring the drawings, the permit number and the last invoice, and we will tell you honestly what finishing it costs. Call 000-000-0000

The problem with buying good furniture in this city is not choice, it is coordination. A kitchen is designed by one firm, built by another, and then furnished eight months later from a showroom that has never seen the room. The result is a beautiful apartment full of pieces that do not quite relate to it — slightly the wrong scale, slightly the wrong tone, and bought under time pressure because the sofa had to arrive before the housewarming.

Our partner houses exist to close that gap. They are twelve cabinetry, upholstery, surface, lighting and hardware houses across Milan, Paris, Copenhagen, Antwerp, London, Kyoto, Venice, Vicenza, Florence and Brooklyn. Several are the interiors divisions of fashion and couture houses, which is where a great deal of the most interesting furniture has come from over the past decade — the same ateliers, the same cloth, the same colour discipline, applied to rooms instead of collections.

Being an independent design-build firm rather than a dealer for any one of them is the point. We are not owned by any of these houses and none of them owns any part of us, so we can specify across all twelve for one room. Where we hold a trade account the trade price is passed through and our margin is stated openly on the schedule — you always see both numbers, which is not how this trade usually works.

What sourcing through us actually involves

The unglamorous half is most of the value. Anybody can choose a sofa.

  • A furniture plan at real dimensions

Drawn against the finished construction drawings, so that a piece which will not fit through the building — or turn the stair — is discovered on paper.

  • Specification across all twelve houses

One room can take cabinetry from Milan, upholstery from a Paris atelier, lighting from Venice and hardware from Florence, specified together rather than assembled by accident.

  • Allocation on limited editions

Several partner houses release numbered seasonal editions that sell out in a fortnight. We hold allocation, which is the only reliable route to a piece from a collection like that.

  • Lead times mapped to the build

Every item plotted against the construction programme before anything is ordered. Long-lead pieces go first, which is often before demolition.

  • Trade pricing, openly

The trade price and our margin each appear as their own line. You are never guessing at what the markup is.

  • Receiving, inspection and storage

Everything is delivered to our store, unpacked, inspected against the schedule and held there. Nothing arrives into a half-finished apartment and nothing lives in your hallway.

  • White-glove installation and styling

Assembled, placed, levelled, dressed and photographed, with every scrap of packaging leaving with us on the same day.

  • A furniture schedule for your records

Every item, finish, dimension, supplier and order date, handed over as a document. It is what you will want in five years when something needs matching or repairing.

The partner houses, by what they do

The full roster, with what each is genuinely good for, is on the design partners page.

  • Kitchen and cabinetry systems

Castellane Milano for contemporary lacquer and rift-veneer kitchens, Nordhavn Studio for Danish oak wardrobe and storage systems, Vellum & Oak for hand-painted English in-frame joinery in period rooms.

  • Couture and fashion-house interiors

Maison Verrier for upholstered wall panels, screens and cloth by the metre in the atelier's own dye lots; Atelier Brumaire for numbered seasonal furniture editions; Sartoria Lombarda for hand-stitched leather and wool flannel upholstery tailored the way a jacket is.

  • Fine joinery and millwork

Kimura Mokkō for Japanese joinery in ash, hinoki and smoked oak with no visible fixings; Halden Brothers in Brooklyn for solid American hardwood millwork, and for the speed of having a partner one subway ride away.

  • Surfaces, lighting and hardware

Terrazzo Nove for terrazzo, engineered stone and marble cut to our templates from a single reserved block; Lume Aurelia for hand-blown Venetian glass lighting; Ferraccio Hardware for unlacquered brass and bronze that patinates properly.

  • Systems and partitions

Ossature for blackened steel and glass partitions, slim internal windows and structural shelving — the answer when a loft or an office must be divided without being darkened.

Buying well, honestly

What we tell clients before they spend, including the parts that reduce what they spend with us.

  • Spend on what you touch

Seating, tables, hardware and lighting are used every day and reward quality enormously. Decorative pieces reward it far less, and that is where a budget can sensibly be trimmed.

  • Scale beats brand every time

A correctly proportioned piece from an unremarkable maker looks better in a room than a celebrated piece at the wrong size. We draw everything at real dimensions for exactly this reason.

  • Do not order before the drawings are final

The most expensive furniture mistake is a beautiful piece bought before the layout was fixed. It never quite fits, it cannot be returned, and the room ends up designed around it.

  • Mix, do not match

A room furnished entirely from one house looks like a showroom. The best rooms we build combine three or four houses, some vintage, and something the client already owned.

  • Keep what works

We will tell you which of your existing furniture is worth keeping. Reusing three good pieces is frequently the difference between a furniture budget that fits and one that does not.

Questions

Designer & Fashion-House Furniture — the questions we are asked most

Who are the partner houses?

Twelve cabinetry, upholstery, surface, lighting and hardware houses across Milan, Paris, Copenhagen, Antwerp, London, Kyoto, Venice, Vicenza, Florence and Brooklyn. Several are the interiors divisions of fashion and couture ateliers. The design partners page lists every one of them with what it is genuinely good for. They are, like this entire demonstration site, invented.

Do I have to buy furniture through you?

No. Plenty of clients build with us and furnish themselves, and we will happily give a furniture plan at real dimensions so that what they buy actually fits. The sourcing service exists because coordinating lead times and receiving goods is genuinely difficult, not because it is compulsory.

How is the pricing structured?

Goods at trade price with our margin shown as its own line on the schedule, plus a sourcing fee from $4,500. You see both the trade price and what we are making on every item. Dealers who quote a single retail number are making the same margin without showing it to you.

Can you get pieces from a collection that has sold out?

Sometimes, through allocation. Several partner houses release numbered seasonal editions that go within a fortnight of release, and we hold standing allocation with them. It is the only reliable route to those pieces, and it has to be committed to early in the project rather than at the end.

What if something arrives damaged?

You will most likely never know. Everything is delivered to our store and inspected against the schedule when it arrives, so a damaged piece is rejected and replaced weeks before your installation date. This is the main reason we receive goods ourselves rather than having them shipped to site.

Are these real brands?

No. Woodside Remodeling is a fictional company and every design and furniture house named on this site is invented for the purposes of this demonstration. No real manufacturer, fashion house or certification body is named anywhere on this website.
